How to Cross Southeast Asia in 30 Days on a Luxury Budget

Southeast Asia on a luxury budget is not a contradiction — it is a skill. Thailand, Vietnam, and Bali can be crossed in 30 days without ever settling for a mediocre room, a bad meal, or a chaotic transfer. Here is exactly how.

The Routing

Fly into Bangkok, exit via Bali. That is the arc. Within it: 10 days in Thailand (Bangkok, Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai or the Andaman islands), 10 days in Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa, Hội An, Ho Chi Minh), and 10 days in Bali (Ubud and the eastern highlands). It flows geographically, avoids backtracking, and works with the prevailing flight routes.

Thailand: 10 Days

Arrive in Bangkok and use it as a base for two nights — it is one of the world's great cities and rewards a serious visit rather than a transit stop. Fly north to Chiang Rai for the Golden Triangle and the White Temple. Then a choice: south to the Andaman (Phuket, Koh Yao Noi) for islands and diving, or east to Chiang Mai for markets and mountain trekking. In peak season the Andaman wins.

Vietnam: 10 Days

Fly from Bangkok or Chiang Mai to Hanoi. Take the overnight train to Sapa for two nights in the rice terrace highlands — one of the most dramatic landscapes in Asia. Fly south to Da Nang and base yourself in Hội An for four nights: the UNESCO-listed ancient town is best explored by bicycle at dawn, before the heat and the crowds. Close in Ho Chi Minh City for two nights of rooftop bars and food markets.

Cabinly Tip

For eSIM across all three countries, Saily offers a regional Asia plan that covers Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia on one card. Far cheaper than buying three local SIMs and activates instantly.

Bali: 10 Days

Fly from Ho Chi Minh City into Ngurah Rai International, Bali's main airport. Spend the first two nights in Ubud — it is unavoidable, but still earns its reputation for rice terrace walks and world-class spa culture. Then head east into the highlands: Sidemen, Selat, Tirta Gangga, Amed. This is the Bali the algorithms do not show you and the one you will come back for.

The Budget

For 30 days of luxury-budget travel across all three countries, budget approximately $4,500–$6,500 per person including flights. The breakdown: flights $800–1,200; accommodation $100–180/night averaging across the route; food $30–80/day; activities $500–800 total; transfers and eSIM $200–300.
