The Aurora Borealis is one of nature's most unpredictable spectacles. Most people who try to see it come home disappointed. Here is how to dramatically improve your odds — and what to do when the sky finally lights up.
The Science: When and Why
The Northern Lights are caused by charged particles from the sun colliding with gases in the Earth's atmosphere. They are visible year-round in polar regions, but you need darkness — which means September through March above the Arctic Circle. Peak aurora activity correlates with the 11-year solar cycle; we are currently at or near solar maximum, making 2025–2026 an exceptional period for aurora viewing.
The Best Locations
- Iceland: the most accessible option for most travellers — fly from most European and North American hubs
- Tromsø, Norway: the largest city inside the Arctic Circle, with excellent infrastructure and guided tours
- Abisko, Sweden: the driest spot in the region, with fewer clouds — the best odds in Scandinavia
- Fairbanks, Alaska: the North American option, with additional wildlife and wilderness access
- Svalbard: the most extreme option — accessible year-round, aurora visible even in autumn before full winter
Maximising Your Odds
Book at least 5–7 nights at your chosen location. The aurora is weather-dependent — cloud cover is your primary enemy, not solar activity. Iceland's south coast is frequently overcast; if you have a car, chase clear skies by driving toward the north or east. The Aurora Forecast app (from the Icelandic Met Office) is the most reliable real-time tool available.
Cabinly Tip
Get out of town. Light pollution is the second enemy. Drive 20–30 minutes from any settlement and find a dark, flat horizon facing north. Bring a tripod if you want to photograph it — aurora photography requires exposures of several seconds.
What It Actually Looks Like
The camera sees it more vividly than the naked eye — long exposures on modern sensors reveal the full colour range that appears more muted in person. But even a moderate display is extraordinary: a living curtain of light shifting across the sky, green and sometimes purple and pink at the edges, moving faster than you expect. It is one of the few natural phenomena that remains genuinely surprising no matter how many photographs you have seen.
